Update: The future came early, as HubPages was quick to introduce subdomains, which should allow the junk to be penalized and the quality authors to thrive. Those external links are still a great idea, though!

Post Guidelines
You're going to want to keep your post small and to the point. Ping.fm will indicate to you if your post is going to be too long for services such as Twitter which have a low maximum word count. There is actually a lot of rumor and myth surrounding the duplicate content issue. I think a lot of it is perpetuated by people who make money selling spinning software.
The actual question of duplicate content is pretty complex, but Google has made some statements. Duplicate content on the same domain is not actually penalized, but it is often ignored by the search engine. We do know that much straight from Google itself.
As for duplicate content on external sites, if this was penalized the way some believe it is, no news sites would have a PageRank higher than 0, since many of them pull their content directly from a syndication service like the Associated Press. What seems to happen is the site that first posted the content ranks higher than sites that duplicate it, but that too might be little more than coincidence, due to the initial site often having the high PageRank to begin with.
There seems to be cases where people think duplicate content resulted in a de-indexing, but it's much more likely this is correlation not causation. I.E. Spam sites are de-indexed for being spam sites. Spam sites do duplicate content, but the penalty relates to their lack of quality and often dubious tactics rather than just duplicated content in general.
There's been no evidence to support any sort of duplicate content penalty as far as backlinks that I've ever come across. At some point, I'll delve into this further and make a hub on it, but in the meantime, I wouldn't worry. There's a lot of argument and debate on the issue, but as far as proof, there is definitely evidence of entire duplicated articles providing individual backlinks, let alone a status update.

This is really useful. I haven't heard of Ping.fm but am working on a project that would definitely benefit from it. As you say, getting backlinks is hard work sometimes, so something (legitimate) that makes it easier is a big plus.
Temirah, Definitely. I've incorporated it into my process and I find it is helping my hubs get indexed quicker, too, so I'm happy with it. It's pretty fast and easy. Once I make a hub, I got ahead and send it out to my services with ping.fm and then I just need to do it once, instead of multiple times. Thanks for the comment!

I'm not sure about the value of those backlinks! If its all the same content at every service used through Ping (because the same post is copied to each one), then why would Google index them all and treat all links as backlinks? Surely the duplicate content filter would negate the value to just one original source?
